Student Registration and Exams

Policy on Student Registration


All midwifery students in Alberta must be registered with the College of Midwives of Alberta in order to undertake any part of their educational experience in the province. Student membership entitles a student to perform the authorized practices comprising the clinical practice of midwifery under the supervision of a qualified supervisor.


To qualify as a student, a person must be:

  • enrolled in a midwifery undergraduate program or a midwifery bridging program approved by the College of Midwives of Alberta;

  • enrolled in a midwifery undergraduate program or a ​midwifery bridging program that has been accepted for assessment for approval; or

  • enrolled in a midwifery education program for indigenous people in the Canadian North, to be dealt with on a case by case basis by the College.

Canadian Midwifery Registration Exam (CMRE) Information

The CMRE is the required National Pre-registration examination for all New applicants to Canadian Jurisdictions.

The CMRE is typically scheduled for May and October of each year. To ensure registration is at the  Canadian Midwifery Regulations Consortium (CMRC)  (check CMRC website), registration and payment must be received at the CMA office no later than the Tuesday prior to the CMRC deadline.

CMA accepts interact email transfers to info at, certified cheques, bank drafts, and money orders in Canadian funds made payable to: "College of Midwives of Alberta".

Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE)

The OSCE is the practical examination required for Internationally Educated Midwives. The next examination is TBD.
