Continuing Competence Program Manual
Our mission is to inspire and empower registrants to continuously strive for excellence in
midwifery care. This is achieved through ongoing professional development activities that
focus on meaningful learning which can transfer into individual practice enhancements.
Midwives are passionate about their clients and work. We aim to fuel this fire with an
encouraging, engaging and relevant Continuing Competence Program. This will ensure that
regulatory and legislative requirements are met, providing Albertans with safe, competent,
quality midwifery care.
Background
In 2019, the Midwifery Profession in Alberta was proclaimed under the Health Professions
Act (HPA). The HPA now requires that all regulated health professionals demonstrate that they
are maintaining and enhancing their competence throughout their careers, through regulatory Standards of Practice.
Guiding Principles of the CMA Continuing Competence Program
● Flexible and Creative:
To accommodate registrant individual learning styles, different practice settings, and to encourage meaningful learning.
● Engaging:
to inspire life-long career learning and passionate registrants.
● Collaborative:
to support an enhanced network of communication and partnership amongst CMA registrants and other professions in the Alberta health care community.
● Convenient and Accessible:
to create an easy-to-use program where registrants can document learning and attest to their competence.
● Responsibility and Accountability:
to maintain competence and provide high quality, safe care to Albertans. Registrants engage in reflective practice and are aware of their individual education needs. They seek out learning opportunities, staying up to date with best practice and research, changes and trends in client care.
The Continuing Competence Program is built on the following beliefs that CMA Registrants are:
● Competent primary care practitioners
● Motivated adult learners
● Able to select and implement learning tools that are meaningful and meet
their needs
● Self-reflective and apply changes to their practice as needed
● Ethical practitioners
