Annual Renewal
In Alberta, legislation requires all midwives to be registered with the College of Midwives of Alberta (CMA) and hold a practice permit to practice midwifery in the province.

To maintain registration and renew your practice permit each year, you must:
-
Submit the online renewal application
-
Meet the Continuing Competence requirements
-
Hold a valid Police Information Check and liability insurance
-
Pay the required fees

Renewal Timeline
Annual Renewal is available through the Registrant Portal from November 1 to November 30 each year.

Practice Permit
The CMA issues a new practice permit to registrants annually. The practice permit includes important information for both you and the public.
-
As required by the Health Professions Act, the permit must be displayed where you provide services or be readily available upon request.
-
Practice permits expire December 31 of each year.
-
You may not practice midwifery in Alberta without a valid practice permit.

Late Renewal
If you do not complete your renewal by November 30, your registration and practice permit will expire on December 31, and you may be subject to:
-
Suspension of your registration
-
Ineligibility to practice until reinstated
-
A late renewal penalty fee

To avoid delays or penalties:
-
Mark your calendar for the renewal period (November 1 to 30)
-
Review your Continuing Competence progress in advance
-
Ensure your Police Information Check and liability insurance are up to date
-
Ensure your contact information is up to date to receive important reminders

Inactive Registration
You may transfer to the inactive register at any time if you are taking a leave from practice or are no longer practicing due to retirement, relocation or working in another capacity (e.g., research, administration).
As an inactive registrant:
-
You do not hold a practice permit and are not permitted to practice midwifery in Alberta
-
You are not required to maintain liability insurance
-
You are not subject to Continuing Competence or active practice requirements
-
You may use the protected titles: Midwife (inactive), RM (inactive), Registered Midwife (inactive)
-
You are still required to renew your registration during renewal
-
You may serve as a member of the CMA Council or Committee member
-
You will continue to receive access to the Registrant Portal, newsletters and updates
-
Your inactive status will be shared with the AAM and PMAO office - please ensure you contact them to confirm their requirements.

To transfer your registration to inactive status, log in to the Registrant Portal and submit the Transfer Registration Form.
You may remain on the inactive register for up to two years. If this period is exceeded and you wish to return to practice, a Registration Committee review will be required.

For more details, refer to the Inactive Guidance Document.

Cancellation
You may cancel your registration and practice permit at any time if you are taking an extended leave from practice or are no longer practicing due to retirement, relocation, or change of profession.
Once you registration is cancelled:
-
You do not hold a practice permit and can no longer practice as a midwife in Alberta
-
You may not use the protected titles: midwife, registered midwife or RM
-
Your registration status is cancelled and you are no longer listed on the register as an active registrant
-
You are no longer eligible to serve on CMA Council or Committees
-
You lose access to the Registrant Portal, newsletters and updates
-
Your cancellation will be shared with the AAM and PMAO office - please ensure you contact them to confirm their requirements.
If you are relocating to another Canadian jurisdiction, confirm registration requirements with the new regulatory body before cancelling your CMA registration. In some cases, it may be easier to maintain active registration with the CMA until your new registration is confirmed.

To cancel your registration, log in to the Registrant Portal and submit the Cancellation of Registration Form.

Once your registration is cancelled, you will need to re-apply to reinstate your registration and practice permit to return to practice in Alberta.
