Equity and Diversity Statement

The CMA stands with all BIPOC women, men, children and 2SLGBTQ+ people in their outrage of the dehumanizing racism and discrimination that is entrenched in our society. We acknowledge that racism and other forms of discrimination are a systemic as well as an individual problem that inflicts profound emotional, physical, and psychological injury on our BIPOC communities and individuals. The CMA is committed to examining our role in this system and to educating ourselves and our registrants about dismantling individual biases, and deconstructing racist and discriminatory beliefs, assumptions, and practices. The road ahead is long, and mistakes will be made, however we firmly believe in the importance of equity for all people and are committed to action. National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

This year on September 30 marks the 6th annual observance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day is set aside to reflect on the legacy and trauma of the Canadian Indian residential school system. TRC Day is a federal Statutory Holiday (covering federal employees and federally regulated workplaces); Alberta leaves provincial stat holiday recognition up to individual private employers. Please be advised that the College of Midwives of Alberta (“CMA”) has become aware of individuals in the areas of Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer and Lloydminster advertising and providing services as a “traditional midwife” or “birth attendant” and engaging labour management and delivery when they are not permitted to do so.
